Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
