British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several entry passages providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," he said. "They were part of thousands of British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out militants who threaten our security, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
